In my eighty-one years on this earth, I have witnessed history unfold from what once felt like a comfortable distance—reading about military conflicts, watching televised coverage of regime changes, and observing international upheavals that seemed safely contained within the borders of other nations.
Today, however, that distance has collapsed. The very systems that once established America as democracy’s standard-bearer are undergoing a profound transformation before our eyes.

This work is a fictional tale written in 2073. It would not have been possible without the countless individuals who shared their memories, insights, and wisdom during the darkest and most transformative period in human history. Particular gratitude goes to the community elders who maintained oral traditions through the collapse, the children who reminded us that the future remained open to possibility, and the practical visionaries who demonstrated that sustainable, equitable communities were not utopian fantasies but achievable realities.
Special recognition goes to the archivists and librarians who risked their lives to preserve books, documents, and digital records during the chaos of collapse, making it possible to reconstruct the intellectual and cultural heritage that informs this analysis. Their dedication to preserving human knowledge represents one of the most heroic acts of our time.
The analysis presented here has been strengthened by conversations and collaborations with survivors from across the bioregional network who shared their experiences and insights generously despite their own losses and ongoing struggles. Their stories provide the heart of this work, while their wisdom provides whatever hope it contains for the future.
Finally, this work is dedicated to those who died during the collapse not from lack of resources or knowledge, but from our collective inability to overcome the systems and consciousness that made destruction seem inevitable. Their sacrifice was not meaningless if we learn from it and choose differently going forward.
